Fethiye is a well known province of Mugla city. It is located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 50 Km away from Dalaman airport. Fethiye is located on the old ancient city of “Telmessos” which you can see the ruins and theatre in the town. Town is popular with tourism and its amazing nature. Population of the Fethiye is around 115,000 and gets busy at summer season.
In an legend “Telmessos” is described as the name of the son of God Apollo. He fells in love with the daughter of the King Agenor, the king of Phoenicia. He turns his self in to a small dog and gains the love of the withdrawn, shy daughter. Then appears as a handsome man and have the son named “Telmessos” which means “Land of the Lights”
The city became part of the Persian Empire 547 BC. “Telmessos” joined the “Attic Delos Union” established in 5th century BC. Later city left the union and became an independent city, continued its relations with the union until the 4th century BC.
Fethiye grew fast in the 19th century, and had a large population of Greek citizens. During the exchange between Greece and Turkey, the Greeks were sent to Greece and the town was settled with Turks came from Greece. The modern name “Fethiye” was given to the town in honor of Fethi Bey who was the one of the first pilots of the Ottoman Air Force died in a mission.
Nowadays Fethiye is a tourist town with its international atmosphere. There are 3 marinas in the town serves to international and local visitors and cruise ships. Town has everything that a tourist looks for. Delicious restaurants, great night life, history and nature, amazing bays, traditional markets and shops, daily excursions and activities and it is probably the only city in the world where you will find sarcophagus and lots of temples and ruins in the streets.
Calis Beach
There are many different places to see in Fethiye. Calis beach which is 7 km on the west side of the town is popular by holiday makers. Area is full of hotels, hostels and properties and villas for rent. Calis beach is known as the best point to see the sunset. With its long sandy beach, restaurants, bars and pubs and popular nightlife Calis beach gets more busy every year. The most interesting attraction in the area is to see the Carretta Carretta Turtles nesting. Turtles visit the beach every year to leave their eggs and people can watch the cabs come out of their eggs and leave the beach to sea.
Oludeniz
Oludeniz is one of the most important and top visited holiday destination of Turkey. With its amazing beach, nature and the turquoise clean waters its been popular by holidaymakers for many years. Mountain called “Babadag” where paragliders take off for an unforgettable flight is in Oludeniz area. Oludeniz is 15 km away from Fethiye city center.
Hisaronu
Another important part of Fethiye is “Hisaronu”. Its a small village with full of hotels, hostels, restaurants, pubs and a colourful nightlife. Area is well know by British citizens as there are 7,000 settled British people lives here. Hisaronu is an nightlife town. Most of the bars and nightclubs of the Fethiye is situated here. Its between the pine tree forests, 3 Km from Oludeniz and 13 km from Fethiye city center.

Public transportation – dolmus and bus
The most common type of public transportation in Fethiye is minibus. It is called here dolmus (dol-moosh). The most important advantage of Fethiye dolmus is its low cost and high service frequency so you do not wait for long standing on the street. Dolmus may stop almost anywhere on the route on request. Fethiye dolmus routes cover almost all area so you may easily get from Calis to Fethiye via Gunlukbasi, from Tasyaka to Karagozler, from Fethiye to Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Ovacik, Saklikent, Seydikemer, Uzumlu, Yaniklar and Kayakoy. Almost dolmuses have been replaced to new ones so dolmuses which go from Calis to Fethiye and from Tasyaka to Karagozler as well as from Fethiye to Oludeniz through Ovacik and Hisaronu are equipped with air conditioners and even with facilities for disabled passengers. So how to get to Oludeniz from Fethiye?
The cheapest way to get to Oludeniz from Fethiye is to catch Oludeniz dolmus from central part of the town near the big mosque – it is the last bus stop for Calis to Fethiye route as well so if you are coming from Calis beach to Oludeniz there will be the place where you change the dolmus.,The last bus leaves Oludeniz at midnight . Taxi in Fethiye and Oludeniz
Fethiye is a resort town so keep in mind that the cost of a Fethiye taxi is quite expensive (like in other resort towns of Turkey). In most cases 2 times more expensive than say in Istanbul. All taxis in Turkey are equipped with taximeters but after midnight (for example you stayed late in Oludeniz and missed last dolmus, in this case Oludeniz taxi is your chance to come back to Hisaronu, Ovacik and Fethiye) we recommend to ask driver the cost before the trip as the cost may be higher in comparison to day time.. So Fethiye taxi is another tranportation method how to get to Oludeniz from Fethiye, Calis and Uzumlu.
Calis Water Taxi
The Calis water taxi is a small boat for 20-30 person that goes from Calis to Fethiye and back to Calis every 30 minutes during holiday season (from May to October). The one way trip takes about 40 minutes. You can buy a ticket at the kiosks on the pier in Fethiye or near the bridge over a canal in Calis. We recommend taking Calis water taxi from Calis to Fethiye right before sunset to enjoy the amazing view of sun going down to the sea.
